Getting The Most Out Of Your Garden Workshop

18 October 2010

If you’re someone who enjoys home DIY projects, but has little space in the house to do these, then what you need is a garden workshop. A workshop in your garden provides a great space to do those home DIY jobs, and also store your tools and equipment.

Garden Workshop

If you are planning on using your garden workshop for your DIY projects, we’ve put together a few ideas to get the most out of your workshop.

Garden Workshop Layout

The most important aspect of your garden workshop is its layout. Draw up a scale plan, including doors and windows, and any power extensions running from your house, and find the best location for each item in your workshop.

When deciding where to locate your tools, equipment and workbenches, remember that you may be bringing large items into and out of your workshop, so keep the floor space near the doors clear. When you are working on your DIY projects, you’ll need easy access to your tools, especially if it is a large item that you are working on, and also remember to leave enough room for a pair of sawhorses. Wood can be laid down across the sawhorses for chalking and rough cutting and for assembly.

Your workbench will benefit greatly from being positioned near the workshop’s windows to ensure that it receives plenty of natural light. Failing this, good artificial light will need to be installed.

Smaller items, such as screws, nails, glues can be stored in drawers and cupboards, making them easy to find in your garden workshop, particularly useful if you’re working on a major DIY project that is spread out in the workshop.

If you are going to spending time in your garden workshop, then a small heater is a definite must. Not only to keep yourself warm whilst working, but this will also aid your DIY projects, as wood projects made in a cold, damp area will expand when moved into a warmer environment, such as your home.

DIY working can produce fine dust particles, and paint gives off fumes, so be sure to keep doors, windows and vents open in your workshop to avoid any ill effects on your health.

Finally, left over materials from your DIY projects can be reused or recycled, so store them in one place, but remember to clear out unwanted rubbish and debris to keep your garden workshop clear.
