If you got a shed for Christmas or even if you have had your shed for years it is important to remember that sheds are not just for Christmas but for life and therefore now is the perfect time to treat your garden buildings and add a fresh coat of wood treatment. This will protect your shed from the expected winds, rain and snow that are expected for the coming weeks. With a mild Christmas period the weather is expected to worsen so acting sooner rather than later is a sensible idea.

Which Treatment should you use?

Cuprinol is the most recognisable brand but any spirit based wood protection will enhance the strength of the wood panels and the sheds durability. There are even different colours that you can buy so you may even be able to give your shed a new look for 2012. A tin should cost around £10 making it inexpensive and a worthwhile task as generally we advise to coat your shed once a year. Maybe you could buy two colours for example red and white, it really is a simple way to add a decorative appeal to your garden.

Likewise if you have a metal shed then you may want to think about purchasing a snow brace kit. A snow brace kit allows you to strengthen the roof of your garden building and increase the life of your metal garden building as well. Unlike wooden sheds you do not need to coat your metal sheds with any wood based treatment but it is always best to check that your metal shed isn’t damaged. If any damage is found then repairing this is essential to the longevity of the garden building. This time of the year is always a good time to check your buildings as strong winds and poor weather conditions can cause much damage.

What about playhouses?

Playhouses like all other garden buildings need to be protected and if you have a wooden playhouse then these can be treated in the same way as wooden sheds but what about plastic playhouses. These do not need treatment but it is always wise to cover them with a protective sheet when not in use to protect from strong winds and rain. It is not a necessity and the playhouses are built to withstand these conditions but it is a simple protective option.

Now is the perfect time to start treating your garden buildings and protecting them for the winter weather that will hit the UK. If you choose not to then it may cost you in the long run.
