Transforming a garden building into a home office

20 October 2015

Working from home can be a double-edged sword.

Not having to get up and leave the house at the crack of dawn— or stand on a cold train platform for the early morning commute — is a huge positive but trying to maintain a separation between home and work can sometimes prove tricky, particularly if you don't have a dedicated work space and are able to close the door and walk away at the end of the day.

This is where a garden building can really come into it’s own.

There are so many different styles and sizes to suit even the smallest of gardens. Creating your perfect home office can be as simple as 1, 2, 3.

1. Choose your garden office style

From super modern to quirky and traditional, there’s a style to suit everyone. Think about what you’ll need in order to work from home — electrical equipment (computers, printers etc), storage and furniture — and choose a style and size that will meet those requirements. Waltons offer a fantastic selection of garden rooms for all tastes and budgets.

2. Prepare for shedworking

If you plan to work from home on a regular basis, you’ll need to ensure that the building is well insulated; to avoid freezing in the winter and feeling as though you’re working in a sauna during the warmer months. There are lots of garden rooms on the market that offer insulation as standard, and there's a handy free Waltons guide on how to insulate your shed.

It’s sometimes worth paying a little bit extra initially for an insulated garden room, though, to avoid these costs later down the line.

If you’re going to be using electrical items in your home office — lighting, a computer and printer etc — you'll also need a qualified electrician to connect your building to the mains supply. Again, there's a very handy Waltons guide on how to get mains power to your shed!

It’s always worth checking on the NICEIC website for an approved tradesman in your area, particularly as garden buildings need to comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.

3. Personalise your garden office space

Now comes the fun bit!

You can totally transform the space to suit your needs. Everything from painting the interior to adding clever storage and shelving, there are so many ways that you can transform your garden building into the perfect home office.

They say that a light and well designed workspace can make you more productive too, so — instead of sneaking off to watch daytime TV when you should be working — your garden office could even help you improve your productivity!

Transforming a garden building into a home-office can be the perfect solution to working from home.

Not only will you be able to close the door and keep your work and home life separate, it will also drastically reduce your daily commute!

What's not to love about that?!
