Metal shed questions
The questions we're asked most often.
Are metal sheds any good?
Garden sheds are available in various materials, so it makes sense to consider the pros and cons of each type to decide which is best for you: our ultimate shed buying guide will help you with this. But in terms of quality, you don’t have to worry: a good modern metal shed will provide a sturdy, secure storage solution or workshop space that’s both durable and easier to maintain than a wooden shed.
Many of the metal sheds available here come with anti-rust and corrosion guarantees and have been designed and tested to withstand high wind conditions, offering robust and long-lasting protection. What’s more, with a wide range of styles and sizes to choose from, you won’t have any trouble finding a metal garden shed to fit the space you have available.
What are the advantages of metal sheds compared to wooden or plastic sheds?
If you’re looking for a secure, easy-to-use, low-maintenance shed, then metal sheds can be an excellent option. They don’t require any timber treatment, won’t degrade due to damp or rot and usually come with a discreet, windowless finish that makes them perfect for storing tools and equipment.
Why choose a metal shed?
If you’re looking for a super low-maintenance secure garden building, a metal garden shed makes a great choice. The prefabricated panels snap together to form a rigid structure that’s built to withstand the worst of the UK weather, and though easy to assemble, they are designed to be padlocked together from the inside.
What metal sheds do you offer?
Metal garden sheds are known for their durability and longevity, and the simplicity of these buildings ensures easy assembly. Available in a range of popular shed sizes and designs, these metal sheds offer a reliable garden storage solution for safeguarding all kinds of outdoor equipment. Whether you’re looking for a small metal shed to store tools or a larger structure with lockable sliding doors for bigger items or even vehicles, the metal storage sheds available here provide extra security and protection against the elements. Options include single-door space savers, metal bike sheds and even spacious workshops.
What can I use a metal shed for?
Our range of metal sheds offers excellent storage for gardening tools and equipment, especially more expensive items like lawnmowers, bicycles, electric bikes and scooters. You can even use our largest metal shed, measuring a very generous 20x10 ft, as a garage for your car. A metal shed built on a concrete slab base is also by far the best way to keep vermin out of your bins. With fortnightly collections becoming increasingly common, it gives you great peace of mind to know that your rubbish is safely stored so that pests and rodents can’t get at it.
Are metal sheds waterproof and weatherproof?
Waltons’ metal sheds are built to be durable, weather-resistant and generally waterproof in rainy conditions. The galvanised steel used in their construction protects against rust and the built-in ventilation helps to reduce condensation. Correct assembly on a level base plays a large role in keeping the metal sheds weather-resistant and waterproof.
Will a metal shed stand up to high winds?
With the addition of an anchoring kit for a metal shed floor, designed to secure your shed to a concrete slab base, your galvanised steel shed stands up to strong winds. For more information on building a level shed base, please consult our guide to building a shed base for step-by-step instructions.
Are metal sheds maintenance-free?
Metal sheds are extremely low in maintenance; however, they do need checking occasionally. It is sensible to ensure gutters and roof edges remain clear of debris, inspect all fixings after bad weather, and ensure the door opening mechanism remains smooth.
How do I stop condensation in a metal shed?
Metal sheds are ideal for storage, so you’ll want to maximise the protection they offer by keeping condensation to a minimum. A top tip is to keep the air circulating by regularly opening doors. This might be taken care of naturally through regular use of the items you’re storing, if you have a metal bike shed, for example. But if you use your metal garden shed on a seasonal basis, say for outdoor furniture or garden tools used mainly in the spring and summer, then remember to give it an airing at regular intervals throughout the year. Also consider how items are stored within the metal shed. Quality storage boxes, cupboards, drawers and weather-proof covers are well worth the investment, and help prevent corrosion. Also, try to avoid clutter to help the air circulate. If you have mains power, you could consider a dehumidifier. See our guide on getting mains power to your shed for help with this.
How do I insulate a metal shed?
Insulating a metal shed is worth considering if you want to keep the inside temperature stable. This can help to protect stored items and provide a more welcoming environment if you’re using your metal shed as a workshop. It can also help to keep moisture to a minimum. The first step for insulating your metal storage shed is to fill and seal any spaces in the structural frame. Next, decide on which material to use for insulating the inside walls of your metal shed. There are several options, including bubble wrap, Rockwool, PIR insulation boards and wool.
Once your insulation is in place on your metal shed’s interior, it’s time to install wall boards or panelling over the top. Again, there are various options, which include hardboard, plywood, tongue and groove, and pallet board.
Each of these insulation options comes with various pros and cons. The choice that’s right for you will very much depend on your own specific needs and the purpose of your metal garden shed. Find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of the different options in our guide to insulating your shed.
