It is recommended that a minimum of two people construct a wooden shed. Once the area is clear from obstruction, create a hard, flat surface. This could be by laying concrete slabs, pressure treated bearers or by constructing a Walton’s Portabase. See ‘Laying a Shed Base’ below.
After you have laid your base for the wooden shed, check that it is completely flat with a spirit level. If it is even slightly askew it can cause the whole garden building to be unstable. For added protection, it might be a good idea to treat the base of the garden shed with a high quality wood preservative- this will help it last longer and resist wood rot. Lay the base of the shed onto the foundation and fix according to instructions. Consider the position of the windows and doors and secure the back gable onto the base. Using the same method, fit the door and window of the wooden shed ensuring that all timber is straight and flat. Secure the bottom rails of the wooden shed to the base and position the roof according to position of cut-outs in the front and rear gables. Ensure a clear overhang is left front and back. Fix the roof to the walls as instructed. Position the roofing felt along the low edge of the roof with equal overhang at both sides. Fold around roof framing and secure with felt tacks ensuring it remains flat. Repeat on other side and then lay central piece of felt in the middle of the construction overlapping the first two pieces. Ensure it is flat and secure along overlays with tacks at regular intervals to prevent lifting from occurring.
Fit corner trims, fascias and trim any protruding felt. Apply wood preservative.
In order to begin, you need to decide what kind of base you are going to have for your wooden shed. A concrete base, a pressure treated bearer base, a cement base or a Walton’s Portabase.
A concrete base can either simply be laid by placing concrete slabs directly onto the ground or alternatively you may wish to dig out some ground and lay your slabs to ensure that your garden shed is level with the floor. Concrete bases allow excellent natural drainage in between stones.
A pressure treated base or tanalised bearer base requires a dug out area filled with hardcore. This needs to be as compacted down and level as possible. Lay the bearers on the hardcore 16” apart at 90 degrees to the wooden shed's floor joists. Tap the bearers into the hardcore until completely level.
A cement base requires a level of hardcore to be laid in a dug-out area. It is imperative that this is level to ensure a flat foundation for your wooden shed. Cover and fill with sand. Next, mix concrete and pour onto sand keeping as level as possible. Leave to dry ensuring the cement is not over exposed to wet weather and cannot dry out.
All bases must be laid flat to ensure a level build. An unlevel shed base can put stress on your garden shed's joints causing warping and splitting of wood. More information about shed bases and laying a Portabase can be found on the Building-a-Base page.
