Wooden Dog Kennel FAQs

What size dog kennel do I need for my dog?

You will want a kennel that allows your dog enough room to stand up, stretch out and be able to lie down and move around comfortably. Waltons currently recommends its wooden dog kennels for smaller dogs, so always check the product dimensions before buying.

Are wooden dog kennels suitable for all weather conditions?

Yes. The wooden dog kennels from Waltons are designed for the outdoors and provide shelter against various types of weather. Similar to all timber buildings, proper construction of your new kennel and regular maintenance will be required if you wish to maintain it properly.

How secure are outdoor dog kennels?

Waltons’ outdoor dog kennels have been built as a secure, weatherproof enclosure for dogs. The kennel has a sturdy timber frame construction. The front of the kennel has anti-snag mesh panels, and there is also a roofed sleeping compartment and a fenced run that allows your dog to go out. Like all kennels, you need to ensure that they are properly assembled and maintained regularly to keep it secure and in good condition.

Do dog kennels provide enough ventilation for pets?

A well-designed kennel offers shelter without becoming “stuffy”. The mesh panels allow cool, fresh air into the kennel whilst the roof provides a dry and quieter area for your dog to rest. Ventilation can improve your dog’s comfort level, hygiene levels and reduce unpleasant smells.

What base is required for a dog kennel?

The kennel base needs to be smooth, hard-wearing and able to drain water quickly. A concrete or tarmac base is ideal as it will help support the kennel structure and make cleaning easier. It would not be advisable to place a kennel over uneven grass or soft ground, as these bases tend to harbour moisture and may cause the kennel to become unstable.

Are dog kennels easy to clean and maintain?

Cleaning your dog kennel is relatively simple. Bedding should be removed regularly for airing or cleaning. The floor and run will need cleaning. Mesh and latches need inspection and replacement if damaged, and drainage needs to be kept clear. Any timber parts need to be cleaned and cared for in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
