Pergola FAQs
What is a pergola used for?
A pergola offers an aesthetic and defined outdoor space in your back garden, ideal for dining, relaxing, entertaining, or simply just an area to shelter your outdoor furniture. It provides partial shade whilst maintaining a bright, airy and spacious feel.
Do I need planning permission for a pergola?
Typically, no, you do not need planning permission for a pergola as it is classed as an outdoor structure; however, if your pergola exceeds the maximum permitted height or takes up more than 50% of your outdoor space, it may be worth talking to your local authority.
Do pergolas provide shelter from the rain?
Not completely. Pergolas provide only partial protection from the outside elements; however, they can be customised with covers and canopies that provide additional protection from the outdoors.
Do I need a base for my pergola?
Yes, pergolas need a base that’s level and firm in order to remain stable. The base can be made from paving slabs, concrete, decking, or well-levelled gravel that helps maintain the structure of the pergola and doesn’t put too much stress on the frame.
