Climbing Frames & Swings
Climbing frames and swings are fantastic for keeping children occupied for hours on end. Parks and soft play are great, but it’s also helpful to have an outdoor space at home where your kids can let their minds and bodies run free.
Climbing frames and swings are fantastic for keeping children occupied for hours on end. Parks and soft play are great, but it’s also helpful to have an outdoor space at home where your kids can let their minds and bodies run free. A tower playhouse with a slide and swing creates an adventure playground in your own back garden.
The best part is that it doesn’t have to look like a playground. You can turn these garden playhouses into anything with some imagination and decoration. Transform it into a pirate ship, a princess tower, a rocket into space or a cosy cabin. Not sure which playhouse will bring your vision to life? Check out our helpful playhouse buying guide.
Encourage outdoor play
A playhouse with a wooden climbing frame is an excellent way to encourage independence and confidence in young children. It helps them learn how to grip and balance, increasing their coordination skills and strength. Swings are an incredible play option for developing muscle control and rhythm, not to mention they’re fun! Slides allow little ones to zoom down from a tower playhouse platform, run to the steps, and start all over again.
Playhouse safety features
Walton’s wooden playhouses are carefully curated for your child’s play and safety. The doors are made with a finger gap to prevent trapping little hands. Instead of glass, we’ve chosen styrene-glazed windows and installed slip-proof ladder treads so kids can clamber up and down to their heart’s content. We also build our playhouses with sustainably sourced pine, smoothed to perfection for zero splinters.
Customising a playhouse
Every child is different, so they need their unique twist on a playhouse. If you’re unsure where to start, ask your children to help! What are their likes and dislikes? Would they love a rose-pink house filled with art activities? Perhaps they would prefer a jungle theme, with leaf stencilling on the wood and an explorer's dressing-up box.
We are constantly amazed at the creations our customers come up with. Take a look at our catalogue of decorated playhouse photos for ideas.

Climbing frames & swings – more info
Keeping children entertained can be difficult and expensive. It’s not long before you’ve run out of ideas and tell them to get some sunlight. But they constantly come back inside saying they’re bored! A playhouse with a wooden climbing frame encourages children to leave their computers and spend time outdoors.
The Poppy tower wooden playhouse is perfect for smaller gardens with its compact ladder design and viewing platform. If you have space to spare, the Poppy tower playhouse with activity centre is great for bigger kids. The ladder and platform provide a sturdy climbing surface, while the gentle wiggle slide helps them get down easily.
How to look after a playhouse
Waltons’ playhouses can last decades with the correct care, so we recommend an annual upkeep. Treat the wood with weather protection, and decorate with outdoor paint so the colour stays bright all year round. Use a mild detergent and damp cloth to remove marks gently. Read our ‘tips for playhouse maintenance’ article for more.
Does my playhouse need a base?
Yes, every playhouse needs a base for support and stability. The structure may be less sturdy without one, creating gaps and leaving it open to weather damage. Our article, ‘how to build a shed base,’ has easy and practical tips to help you get started.
How should I decorate a playhouse?
You can decorate a playhouse however you like – there are no rules! If you want a bright, colourful playhouse, choose red, pink or yellow. Add stencils, like giant flowers or a skull and crossbones, for a statement look. Or keep the wood's natural finish and paint the window frames for a pop of colour. Remember to give the inside some thought with snuggly blankets, cushions, toys and solar or battery-powered lights.
