Care and Timber Treatment

In order to care for and protect your summerhouse, you need to ensure that you are using a high-quality wood preserver. Once you have put this onto the timber, you’re then going to need to apply a water-repellent topcoat or exterior wood paint.

Before you can even do this though, you need to prepare the timber by cleaning the surface with mild soapy water and then drying completely for 48 hours.

Ideally, you want to do this once per year, and make sure that you are closely checking the joins between the summerhouse and the shed.

Sort of. There is one outer frame and one roof, but they are physically divided into two rooms by an interior wall.

Does it need a base?

Yes. A summerhouse with a side shed is most definitely going to need a flat, solid, level base in order for it to be safe and secure. Read our shed base guide. Some of our summerhouses can be purchased with a timber base, perfect for uneven, soft ground such as mud, grass, or gravel.

Can I use the summerhouse as a home office?

The short answer is yes, but you need to make sure that you have prepared the summerhouse appropriately for it to be used as a home office. This includes insulating the space and having a safe power and internet set-up. Ultimately, as they aren’t designed for winter use, a log cabin or insulated garden room may be more suitable.

Can bicycles or a lawnmower fit in the shed?

Yes, a bicycle and a lawnmower will usually be able to fit in the shed section. However, the exact answer is going to be dependent on the model and size that you choose.

Where should I position my summerhouse and side shed?

Ideally, you want to place your summerhouse with a side shed on a level base, with it facing in a particular direction depending on whether you want morning sun or evening light. You should keep it at least 30cm away from boundaries to allow access.
