You’ll know as well as we do that children have no end to their imagination. Will it be a tea party? A hidey-hole for reading? Or a place to run wild where the adults can’t catch you?

We want to ensure that when you choose your first playhouse, it’s a fantastic match for your family. Our kids’ wooden playhouses are made using the Toys Safety Regulation for ages 36+ months. The mineral-felt roofing provides shelter from the rain, and shatterproof styrene windows allow little hands to bang against them without breaking. Have a read below, and check out our playhouse buying guide to help you make your choice.

Choosing the best playhouse

You need to consider a couple of things when selecting the best playhouse for your kids.

Space

How much space you have in your garden will depend on the size of your playhouse. Measure the area to ensure the dimensions fit. Ideally, you want enough room around the outside of a kids’ wooden playhouse for easy assembly and maintenance.

Style

Consider which wooden playhouses are the most age-appropriate for your children. If you have a small child, they may prefer the Snug or the Dutch Barn Playhouse. These are cosy, one-story playhouses, ideal for experiencing calming activities and imaginary play.

Older kids will benefit from a tower playhouse to encourage physical play and adventure.

Benefits of a wooden playhouse

Garden playhouses don’t just look good, they also have a wealth of benefits for your children’s health and wellness.

  • Encourages imaginative play - Setting up an area dedicated to imagination allows children to enter a world of make-believe without the interruptions of electronic devices.
  • Develops physical abilities - A structure for kids to climb on, run around and slide down develops their gross motor skills. This helps with balance for sports and even increases reading skills.
  • Helps make friends - Garden playhouses are exciting places for children to play together and organically develop friendships.

Playhouse activity centre

If you have older kids with a little too much energy, a playhouse activity centre is sure to wear them out. The steps, slide and swing promote physical activity, keeping them entertained for hours.

Wooden playhouses - more info

Walton’s wooden playhouses are designed with your children’s safety and creativity in mind. Our sustainably sourced timber is rounded and planed to reduce the risk of splinters. We’ve even created a gap around the door to avoid trapping little fingers. The interlocking shiplap tongue and groove cladding alongside our 10 Year Anti Rot Guarantee ensures your playhouse will withstand the elements and any rough and tumble.

Older kids can enjoy our Poppy tower playhouse with activity centre with a built-in slide and ladder for a view of the garden. Or you can downsize to a Snug playhouse with tower & activity set for younger children or stick to one storey with the Dahlia Playhouse.

How to treat a wooden playhouse

Kids’ wooden playhouses need annual upkeep using wood treatment or paint to prevent weather damage. Gently wipe away dirt with a damp cloth and clean the windows to keep your garden playhouse looking fresh. You can get more info in our ‘tips for playhouse maintenance’ article

Does a playhouse need a base?

All playhouses need a level base for stability and to ensure the pieces line up correctly. This ensures there are no gaps around the windows that could cause unnecessary weather damage. For help with this, read our ‘how to build a shed base’ article, which will give you some great pointers.

How to decorate a playhouse

You can custom decorate your playhouse using different coloured paint and stencils. Give the exterior character with picket fences, plant pots, bunting and signs. Don’t forget comfy cushions, rugs and solar or battery-powered lights for the inside. It’s a great idea to involve your kids in this process - they can decide which themes and styles they want, and get stuck in with the painting, too!
